Dewey
Edson Abel passed away on April 10th 1998. A beloved Husband, Father and Friend to many.
He will be sorely missed by all that knew him and loved him. He left in this world his wife of 53 Years,
Betty Carter Abel of Miami, a brother, Floyd of Seymour Indiana, a sister, Jean of
Seymour, a son, Dewey Carter Abel of Miami, and two daughters, Jane Ellen Abel of Miami
and Helen Abel Samples of Tavernier, and a grandson, Shawn Edward Samples of Seattle,
Washington.
Born in 1925 to Zora and George
Abel in the town of Shoals, Indiana.
He was a graduate of Shields High
School in Seymour Indiana. This was where he started dating Miss Betty Lou Carter, also of
Seymour. They were married in 1945.
He joined the Army Air Corps in
???? to become a pilot. After WWII, he was discharged and returned to Seymour.
He was recalled to active service
during the Korean War and never left again till retirement. He was transfered to England
in the late 1950's, taking Betty and the children with him. When they returned to the
States in 196? he was stationed at Homestead Air Force Base, Florida.
Upon retirement in 1968, he was
hired by Florida Power and Light. As soon as he was hired, the Union went on strike. It
was not Dewey's nature to strike and he continued to show up for work until threats
against his his family forced him to stay out. He retired from Florida Power and Light in
1988.
Always an avid fisherman, he would
spend days out on the deep blue waters of the Gulfstream in search of fish. I personally
think that as far as he was concerned, it could never get to rough to go fishing.
